The County of Orange RDMD Agency needed to update it's aging and hard to maintain Intranet Portal that required programmer development assitance for even the smallest of modifications. Much of the portal contained links to documents, other websites, and other applications all of which constantly changed. We recommended using Microsoft's SharePoint Services as a replacement and implemented SharePoint in a staged approach. Currently this SharePoint site supports a user base of 1,300 plus users.
This installation of SharePoint has been branded and customized for the RDMD Agency use. In additional to the wealth of standard items offered by SharePoint there are a lot of custom designed Web Parts that integrate with either their own internal applications and/or outside services. The site is highly audience sensitive and display content and web parts based on roles defined in Active Directory.

Boeing - Reporting Wizard
Technologies: NET 2.0, WinForms, C#, XML, SQL Server, Oracle, Reporting Services, Office Automation, Dynamic compilation, Forms Generation Screen Shot Image |
The Estimating and Pricing group of Boeing, Washington needed a reporting tool that allowed for input/criteria screens that contained complex filtering/ value lookups and validation. At the same time they wanted all these attributes to completely dynamic and easy to change without Programmer assistance. This capability went beyond the standard Input screens for Reporting Services or Crystal Reports. They even wanted to execute dynamic C# code that could be stored in a database and executed at run time.
They called this application the "Reporting Wizard". Previous attempts by other Consultants had only meet about half these requirements and the system was still too "hard-coded" and much of the complex actions were not wired-up properly. There was also no front-end loader for this information and administrators had to insert data manually into a complicated collection of database tables.
Well, the Wizards at Applications R-Us came up with the proper design and solution for their Reporting Wizard that allowed for all the complexities and was completely configurable and could be changed on the fly without redeploying the application to hundreds of users. By heavily exploiting the .NET capability to look at it's own compiled code and expose these attributes at run-time we were able to meet and exceed their requirements. Even the executing of custom C# code on the fly worked flawlessly. We also provided an easy to use Maintenance screen that allowed Report admins to enter and modify the criteria as needed.

County of Orange - Weights And Measures Inspection System
Technologies: NET 2.0, C#, VB.NET, WinForms, XML, SQL Server, SQL Replication ,Tablet PC, Business Objects Screen Shot Image |
The County of Orange Agricultural Commissioner needed to automate their manual inspection of Weighing and Measuring devices. Devices to inspect include gas station pumps, gas and electric meters, supermarket scales, retail registers, truck scales, wire and chain dispenser - about 100 different types of devices. They also wanted this application to be on a Tablet PC they could take in the field. They also wanted 100% uptime and did not want to encounter interruptions in service due to weak or non-existent wireless connectivity.
To meet these requirements the team at Applications-R-Us decided on .NET Windows based application that run on a Panasonic Toughbook with full Windows XP operating system. The application was designed with .NET WinForms for the User Interface and .NET Business Logic and Data Tiers. The tablets were equipped with SQL Server 2005 Express. SQL Server 2005 databases were located at the Counties Data Center. The application stored all new data on the local database. Then by utilizing the built-in capabilities of Windows Synchronization on the tablet and SQL Server 2005 data replication services the data would be automatically updated from the tablets to the Data Center whenever a wireless or hard-wired connection was available. The replication worked both ways and would update all the other tablets with this new information and any additional data entered by administers at the central location.
This model gave the County their 100% uptime capability not available on traditional wireless only applications. This also provided the added benefit of providing the users with a complete Windows XP OS where they could run other Windows application.
